Qingyang (Chingyang) 清揚

Performer, theatre maker, movement practitioner, writer, and producer.

I have performed and created for the stage since a young age.

As a theatre artist my recent works have embraced boundary-pushing yet authentic blending of forms and creation of embodied poetic spaces. My current practice features the intercultural, the interdisciplinary and the intersectional, as well as art as healing.

My works include Bamboos Waiting (Performer & Writer, Seeding Space residency – London Performance Studios 2025, ongoing), Journey of Whispering Dreams (Performer & Writer, FUSE International Festival, The Bread & Roses Theatre, Rich Mix, 2023-2025, ongoing), The Good Woman of Sichuan (Performer and Theatre Facilitator, Berlin International Film Festival 2021), The Fear musical (Assistant Director, Edinburgh Fringe 2018, 5-star media reception), Baklâ (Producer, Max Percy+Friends, Exeter Phoenix 2024, Winner of Asian Arts Award) and The Cloud Messenger (Movement Director, BARBAROUS Production, 2025).

Through the long-term process of making my solo physical theatre show Journey of Whispering Dreams (2023 - ongoing), I have innovatively borrowed traditional Chinese performing arts forms to experiment with several contemporary performance and movement approaches that had influenced me (Anna Halprin, Jerzy Grotowski, Phillip Zarrilli, Laban technique) and developed my unique intercultural performance and movement practice. I have extended this practice to facilitating workshops too.

Before graduating with MA Theatre Practice at the University of Exeter (with distinction), I read BA English Literature at Sun Yat-sun University and The University of Manchester, where I had studies in creative writing and comparative poetry research -- English Romanticism and Chinese Classical poetry both have a place influencing the poetic and lyrical quality within the theatre I make today.

As a writer, alongside for stage and performance I have also written immersive theatre, short films, poems, non-fiction and short stories, bilingually in English and in Chinese.

As a producer, I have produced for both theatre and animation, in the UK and internationally, for example, for Baklâ by Max Percy+Friends (Winner of Asian Arts Award, Offie nominated) and in house for Guangzhou Opera House. I am also the founder and director of Waterway Workshop, having produced theatre workshops on various topics for diverse groups, as well as participatory events and youth theatre, in the UK and internationally.
